The Long Dog Vineyard and Winery is located just outside of Milford Every day on my way in to Picton, I drive by Long Dog Vineyard and Winery (open April to November 11:0am to 6:00pm daily and most days from December to March), one of a few near Milford, located on Brewers Road, about 20 minutes to downtown Picton. This was one of the driving factors in why I chose Long Dog Vineyard and Winery as my first stop in my series of reviews of wineries in Picton and the surrounding Prince Edward County, this along with my affection for long dogs, as I have one myself. I first stopped at Milford winery in March after a long and dreary winter that battered homes and roads everywhere in the County.  Pulling into the property, a battered OPEN flag blowing in the wind, I can imagine the property in the warmer months to come, sun drenched vines and green grass. The Long Dog Vineyard and Winery boasts 20 acres and 25,000 vines, consisting of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Gamay and all wines are made using solely the grapes grown in their vineyard and processing is done in the barns on the property. The winery has a small tasting room which greets you with cheerful dachshund décor, I noticed that before I noticed the wine on display, partially because of my affinity for dachshunds, partially because there wasn’t a lot on display this time of year. I was greeted by a quiet woman with a hello and nothing more, I commented to her that I loved the décor and mentioned I also had a dachshund and I didn’t get a reply. There was no offer to taste any wine, even though I was with a group of 4 and no commentary to us as we browsed the selection of wines, even though we were audibly discussing which to buy. I did end up purchasing two reds, as did the others in the group, despite the somewhat cold buying atmosphere and no explanation on the differences in the years. We left with the 2016 Top Dog Pinot Noir, the 2015 Otto Pinor Noir and the 2014 Otto Run Free Pinot Noir among us. I am not an expert wine taster or sommelier by any standard, so this was not off putting at the time, I was happy to experience the winery and looking forward to trying the wine. I tried all the wines we purchased that day, my favourite being the 2014 Otto Run Free Pinot Noir. The Long Dog Vineyard and Winery is worth the short drive from Picton, whether in the car on a picturesque bike tour. I recommend visiting during the Spring Summer season to maximize the experience, likely during these months the tasting room is open and operating tastings and will likely have more product for purchase. Make sure to check out nearby wineries in the area like Half Moon Bay Winery, Exultet Estates, Lighthall Vineyards whether you’ve come by car or by bike, it is worth the scenic drive from Picton to get the full experience of some of the County’s best offerings.Wineries TASTING ROOM HOURS Open April through November11:00 am to 6:00 pm daily,December through Marchcall or email to arrange a visit Please contact Victoria at 613-476-4140email Winery Location104 Brewers Road.Milford, Ontario K0K 2P0
